Only bacterial infections can be killed with antibiotics. Bacterial infections include some ear and sinus infections, skin infections, meningitis, sore throats caused by strep, bladder infections, bacterial pneumonias to name a few.
Most colds, bronchitis, sore throats, stomach bugs and Flu are caused by viruses and subsequently antibiotics will not work.
Your doctor will tell you when antibiotics are the appropriate treatment option.
Overuse has led to bacterial resistance. This is when bacteria evolve over time so that antibiotics no longer work on them.
- Trust your doctor if he/she tells you that you don’t need them.
- Only take medications your doctor prescribes.
- When antibiotics are prescribed please take them as directed – do not skip doses, take them for the full number of days prescribed, and do not save them for later.
